Britz, also known as Britz Campervans, is part of Tourism Holdings Limited. The New Zealand tourism group acquired the Australian and New Zealand Britz Motorhomes business in 1999. Its wider rental business expanded through the merger with Apollo Tourism & Leisure in November 2022.

In Australia and New Zealand, Britz rents vehicles by category through a physical branch network. Tourism Holdings Australia Pty Limited is the Australian contracting entity; Tourism Holdings Ltd fulfils that role in New Zealand. The Southern African business operates as a franchise, with its own regional vehicle range and rental conditions.

Editorial review

Britz makes the camping format a meaningful part of the rental decision. The Australian 4WD offer involves outdoor living and route planning; the New Zealand range extends from compact vans to motorhomes with much more indoor space. The useful choice is between those ways of travelling, rather than a single level of comfort associated with the brand.

The main trade-off is the amount of detail that sits behind the category name. A New Zealand motorhome can encompass substantially different bed layouts, and the price of a one-way trip depends on more than the daily rental rate. Britz is worth considering when those choices can be settled before booking. The selected category, route charges and protection option deserve as much attention as the initial quote.

Things to consider

  • Some routes carry substantial extra charges.Broome's AUD 900 location fee can materially change the budget, and location charges can sit alongside one-way fees. A route that looks convenient on the branch map may be expensive once the full rental is priced.
  • Preparation and follow-up have been uneven in selected trips.Customer accounts from Australia and New Zealand include battery, fridge, fittings and cleanliness problems, alongside clean vehicles and successful repairs. Reports of helpful incident support also sit beside delays and poor communication.

Britz's Australian and New Zealand fleets combine compact campervans, larger motorhomes and two distinct forms of 4WD camper.

Australia has three road-oriented campervan categories: Trailblazer, HiTop and Voyager. The Trailblazer adds an indoor bathroom for two, while the Voyager adds a roof bed for a party of up to four. The Australian Voyager's upper bed has a 200 kg weight limit, which matters when allocating sleeping places. The Maverick 4WD and Warrior 4WD complete the Australian range, with exterior cooking facilities and sleeping accommodation inside the Maverick or in two rooftop tents on the Warrior.

New Zealand's Venturer, Wanderer, Odyssey and Navigator provide indoor toilets and showers. The Wanderer combines rear single beds, which can form a double, with a front drop-down bed. The Odyssey instead has a rear double, although its position and bathroom arrangement vary. Navigator configurations differ more substantially: the assigned vehicle can have a low-profile or overcab body and a lounge-based or bunk-bed layout. Its Christchurch and Queenstown travel window runs from 14 September 2026 to 16 May 2027, with bookings until 30 April 2027.

The New Zealand HiTop and Voyager share names with the Australian vans but differ in equipment and beds. Both have a secured 12-litre portable toilet and a fixed lower double bed; neither has a shower. All six New Zealand categories are certified self-contained. That certification does not give permission to stay overnight in every location.

A reservation secures a category and its capacity, with similar specifications, rather than a particular manufacturer, model year, colour or layout. This distinction is especially important for the New Zealand motorhomes with several configurations. Child-seat compatibility also needs to match the assigned vehicle; travel-seat and berth counts alone do not establish it.

The Southern African franchise offers camping-equipped 4x4s, including Toyota Land Cruiser, Suzuki Jimny and Toyota Double Cab vehicles, alongside 4x4s and SUVs without camping equipment. That regional range is separate from the Australian 4WD categories above.

DriversIn Australia and New Zealand, drivers must be at least 21 and hold a full licence valid throughout the rental. All drivers must be named and present their documents. A non-English licence may require an accredited translation or International Driving Permit under the destination's rules.
Rental length and billingNormal same-depot rentals have a five-day minimum. One-way minimums range from seven to 28 days, with longer requirements possible for particular seasons or events. Britz charges by calendar day: pickup and return on different dates each count as a rental day.

Australian Low Road liability and depositStandard damage responsibility is AUD 5,000 per incident for 2WD vehicles without a bathroom, AUD 7,500 for 2WD vehicles with a bathroom and AUD 8,000 for 4WD vehicles. The corresponding liability deposit is separate from rental spend and can be debited from the card. Refunds are subject to the agreement and can take up to 14 business days; bank fees or exchange rates can affect the returned amount.
Australian High Road protectionHigh Road costs AUD 55 per rental day for 2WD vehicles without a bathroom or AUD 65 with a bathroom, reducing standard covered excess to zero. For a 4WD, AUD 65 per day leaves AUD 750 responsibility per covered incident. An additional AUD 15 per day alongside the applicable protection reduces standard covered 4WD excess to zero; bogging remains excluded. Negligence, prohibited-road use, belongings and pet damage are among the exclusions, so zero standard excess is not unlimited cover.
New Zealand damage responsibilityLow Road liability is NZD 5,000 per incident for categories without a bathroom and NZD 7,500 for those with a bathroom. High Road can reduce standard covered liability to zero, subject to its exclusions. These are damage-responsibility amounts, not ordinary rental charges.
CancellationUnder the direct terms, the cancellation fee is zero at least 61 days before pickup; AUD 250 or NZD 250 at 60–31 days; 20% of the applicable rental total, with a 250 minimum in the rental currency, at 30–7 days; and 50%, with the same minimum, within six days before pickup. Cancellation at pickup or a no-show costs 100%. A zero cancellation fee does not itself establish the refundability of every payment.
Additional driversEach extra driver costs AUD 4 or NZD 4 per day, with a maximum of 15 billed days: AUD 60 or NZD 60 per person. Some packs include additional drivers.
Child seatsA compatible child seat costs AUD 45 or NZD 45 per unit per rental. Up to two can be fitted in the Australian Voyager or Warrior, and in New Zealand's Wanderer, Odyssey, Navigator or Voyager, subject to the assigned vehicle's fittings. Two-seat categories do not take child seats.
PetsUp to two registered, well-behaved dogs or cats are allowed under the Australian and New Zealand pet policy. Do Britz HiTop and Voyager campervans have a toilet?

The New Zealand versions have a secured 12-litre portable toilet. Their Australian counterparts have no toilet. None of these four versions has a shower, so the country matters as much as the category name when choosing bathroom facilities.

Can I choose the exact layout of a Britz Navigator?

No. Navigator is a five-seat, five-berth rental category covering different low-profile and overcab layouts, including lounge and bunk arrangements. A Britz reservation is for a vehicle category rather than a particular layout or manufacturer. Its travel window from Christchurch and Queenstown is 14 September 2026–16 May 2027.

Does Britz's unlimited mileage in New Zealand include road-user charges?

No. Unlimited rental kilometres and diesel road-user charges are separate. Unless prepaid, the latter are calculated from the distance driven at the applicable category rate. For example, the direct 2026/27 rate for a four-berth category with a bathroom is NZD 8.18 per 100 km.

Can a Britz 4WD be driven on beaches or any outback track?

Beach driving is prohibited, and a 4WD booking does not permit unrestricted track access. Britz applies written-approval requirements and prohibitions to named routes, including routes in the Gibb River Road, Bungle Bungles and Tanami areas. Route status also depends on weather and conditions; permission must cover the intended route.

Does High Road remove all liability on a Britz 4WD?

No. Under the Australian direct terms for 1 April 2026–31 March 2027, High Road alone leaves AUD 750 responsibility per covered incident. The additional 4WD reduction can bring standard covered excess to zero, but exclusions remain, including bogging. It does not cover travel on prohibited roads or every kind of damage.

Can a Britz campervan travel between New Zealand's islands?

Yes, with a ferry booking and a separate ticket. Britz recommends reserving space for a 7.7-metre vehicle to accommodate a possible category assignment. This is a booking allowance, not the length of every Britz vehicle.

Which Britz vehicles can take child seats?

Up to two compatible child seats can be fitted in Australia's Voyager and Warrior, and in New Zealand's Wanderer, Odyssey, Navigator and Voyager. Britz's two-seat categories do not accept child seats. Fittings differ: the New Zealand Wanderer uses compatible universal three-point-belt systems and has neither ISOFIX nor top tether, so the child's seat needs to suit the actual vehicle.

Can I collect a Britz camper in Broome during the Australian summer?

The Broome branch closes from 1 December to 31 March. Alice Springs and Darwin have the same seasonal closure, so these depots cannot be treated as year-round pickup options.
