Cozy Campers is an Icelandic rental business operating as Cozy Campers ehf. It buys vans from vehicle manufacturers and converts them for camping, bringing the vehicle fit-out and rental service into the same business. Founder Birkir Már Benediktsson's background in carpentry and automotive mechanics underpins that approach.
The company operates from Kópavogur, in the Reykjavík area. Its range combines Standard two-wheel-drive campers, Premium Highlander 4×4s and older Budget vehicles. Those lines describe the vehicles themselves; insurance and service packages are separate choices.

Editorial review
Cozy's strongest feature is a focused range with useful choices inside it. Transmission, seating capacity and vehicle line create meaningful alternatives for a small travelling party, while the camper conversions give the offer a clear identity. The decision is less about moving through progressively larger motorhomes than choosing the version of a compact camping setup that fits the trip.
The more demanding part of the rental is choosing the right combination of vehicle, protection and collection arrangements. The base is away from the airport, the Budget line has a materially stricter breakdown-compensation policy, and included collision cover leaves substantial financial exposure. A well-matched camper can work well here, but the lowest rental figure alone gives an incomplete picture of the commitment.
Good points
- A 4×4 choice across two vehicle-age tiers.Highlander I, II and III each have a Budget counterpart, so choosing 4×4 does not automatically mean choosing the newer Premium vehicle line. Two- and three-person layouts are available on both sides of that choice.
- A choice of refundable booking terms.For direct bookings, the Refundable option permits a full refund until the scheduled pickup time. It offers a clear way to retain cancellation flexibility when choosing the rate.
- Positive accounts of the staff and handover experience.Across the 41 Trustpilot reviews examined, customers repeatedly praised the staff alongside the camper's comfort and equipment. That is an encouraging service signal, although the sample also contains reports of faults and difficulty obtaining help after hours.
Things to consider
- Included protection can leave a large bill.In the direct Cozy 1 Manual offer examined for a November rental, CDW carried a €37,000 deductible plus €400 processing per covered incident. The separate €3,000 security deposit did not cap that liability. Protection choice therefore deserves as much attention as the rental price.
- Budget rentals have a stricter response to lost travel time.Under Cozy's stated policy, Budget renters receive no refund for rental time lost to a supplier-fault workshop visit or the vehicle being out of service. Standard and Premium vehicle lines have a different compensation rule. This distinction belongs to the vehicle line, rather than the insurance tier.
- Highlander equipment does not remove damage exclusions.Raised chassis and air intakes do not make river or undercarriage damage insured. Those exclusions remain with Premium Protection, so a 4×4 booking still needs to fit the permitted roads and the renter's tolerance for uncovered damage.

This is a small-camper range organised around two- and three-person layouts, with both 2WD and 4×4 options. The important divisions are the vehicle line, the number travelling and the roads the rental permits.
Standard and Budget Cozy models
The Standard Cozy models use Renault Trafic vans or similar vehicles. Cozy 1 offers manual and automatic versions, while Cozy 2 is automatic. Both sleep two; Cozy 3 increases travel and sleeping capacity to three and comes with either transmission. In the Standard Trafic specifications, the bed grows from 193 × 130 cm in Cozy 1 and Cozy 2 to 193 × 160 cm in Cozy 3.
Budget Cozy 1 is a different proposition from Standard Cozy 1: its reference vehicle is a VW Caddy rather than a Trafic. The Budget description is “3+ years”, without a fixed maximum age. For two people with little luggage, the smaller format may be enough; the stated baggage allowance is two 10 kg soft or carry-on bags.
Highlanders
All six Highlander categories are automatic 4×4s. I and II accommodate two people; III accommodates three. Premium categories use VW Transporter or Ford Transit reference vehicles, while Budget Highlanders use VW Transporters or similar vans. An individual VW feature should not be assumed to come with a Ford allocation.
The Premium Highlanders add an opening sky roof, raised chassis and air intake, larger tyres, a tyre inflator and a full-size spare. Budget Highlanders also have an opening panoramic roof and suspension modifications, but the newer line's full accessory list does not automatically carry across. The roof opening provides local standing access rather than a permanently high interior.
Living space and power
The sofa converts into the bed. In the newer Standard and Premium specifications, a 21-litre fridge, auxiliary battery, USB-A sockets and a 115 W solar panel support the camping setup. The panel's output rating is not a promise of electrical independence in every season. A 230 V inverter is an optional extra.
None of these categories has an onboard toilet or shower. For three occupants, the larger bed and third travel seat make Cozy 3 or Highlander III the relevant starting point; the two-person categories cannot be treated as three-person rentals.

Is there a Cozy Campers depot at Keflavík Airport?
No. Collection and vehicle return take place at the Kópavogur office. Airport transport is a separate part of the journey: the free direct-booking arrival option uses Flybus followed by a local transfer, while a direct transfer is a paid option unless included in a service bundle.
Can I take a Highlander on any Icelandic F-road?
No. Highlanders are eligible only for suitable open summer routes that Cozy permits, and specific exclusions still apply. Krossá crossing is forbidden. Neither 4×4 capability nor Premium Protection makes river or undercarriage damage covered.
What is the difference between a Premium Highlander and Premium Protection?
A Premium Highlander is a vehicle category. Premium Protection is a separately selected damage-protection product. Booking the newer vehicle line does not by itself select that protection, and the Silver, Gold and Platinum service bundles are separate again.
Does a Cozy camper have a bathroom?

Which Cozy campers take three people?
