Editorial review
Freedom Campers offers a manageable choice between simple campervan accommodation and motorhomes with more substantial living facilities. The most useful decision comes early: whether automatic driving or an indoor bathroom matters more. Those priorities lead to different parts of this range; these four categories do not combine automatic transmission with an indoor shower.
The rental needs equally deliberate planning around the vehicle. Travel restrictions and the way financial liability changes during a hire can matter as much as the daily rate. A suitable category is only the starting point; the itinerary and selected protection option need to work together for the proposition to make sense.
Good points
- Lower one-way charges in the south-to-north direction.A trip starting in Christchurch can attract a lower one-way charge than the reverse journey, with no such fee from April to September. This gives travellers who can choose their starting island a concrete planning advantage.
- A protection option that also gathers useful extras.Option 2 combines excess reduction with requested child restraints, outdoor furniture and snow chains, as well as prepaid LPG, toilet chemicals and tolls. Bringing these items into one option makes it easier to assess the package against paying for individual extras.
Things to consider
- The larger motorhomes exclude the Milford road.Path Blazer and Path Explorer cannot be driven on the Te Anau–Milford road. That restriction can rule out an otherwise suitable vehicle for a South Island itinerary centred on driving to Milford Sound.
- Excess reduction resets after an incident.The reduced excess applies to one incident. Standard liability then returns unless another reduction is arranged for the remaining hire, so the original protection choice does not automatically carry through unchanged after a claim.

The fleet spans two automatic HiTop campervans and two manual overcab motorhomes, with a clear step up in living facilities between them.
Bookings are for a vehicle category rather than a guaranteed make, model or year. If the booked category is unavailable, the rental terms allow a substitute with similar seating and facilities. The offer therefore rests on the type of accommodation and equipment booked, rather than the promise of a particular vehicle.
Path Finder 2/3 is the shorter campervan, at 4.65 metres, and uses petrol. Its layout combines a double bed with a single sleeping place and is described for two adults and a child. The diesel 4+1 Path Finder is longer and taller, with more interior headroom and a larger fridge. It has two double beds, including a loft bed, but its five travel seats should not be used to infer a fifth sleeping place.
Both HiTops have fixed toilets, cold-water systems, two-burner cooking and microwaves. Their heaters need campsite power. Choosing either means planning around the absence of an indoor shower, rather than treating the fixed toilet as a full bathroom.
Path Blazer and Path Explorer both measure 6.8 metres long and add indoor showers, larger water tanks, 130-litre fridges, four-burner cooking with a grill, and gas as well as mains-powered heating. Their principal capacity difference is four versus six sleeping places. The Blazer’s extra travel seat does not make it a five-berth motorhome.
Child-restraint arrangements also vary within the range. Path Finder 2/3 has one tight forward-facing position in the centre of the cab and does not accept a rear-facing restraint there. The other categories offer different combinations, so the child’s age and size and the assigned vehicle determine whether the required restraints fit.

Which Freedom Campers vehicles have an indoor shower?
Path Blazer and Path Explorer have indoor showers and cassette toilets. The two automatic HiTops, Path Finder 2/3 and 4+1 Path Finder, have fixed toilets but no installed shower. Hiring a solar shower does not change that distinction.
Can five people sleep in the 4+1 Path Finder?
Do not book it for five sleepers on the strength of the name alone. It has five travel seats and two double beds, but a fifth sleeping place is not confirmed. For a party needing more than four established berths, Path Explorer explicitly accommodates six.
Can I drive a Freedom Campers motorhome to Milford Sound?
Path Blazer and Path Explorer are prohibited on the Te Anau–Milford road. A trip using either motorhome therefore needs a different way to reach Milford Sound. The restriction should be settled before choosing the vehicle, rather than discovered after arranging the route.
Can I collect a vehicle in Queenstown instead of Christchurch?
Queenstown Airport is a conditional remote handover point, not a Freedom Campers branch. The company must accept the arrangement in advance; the service requires at least seven days and does not operate from 15 December to 31 January inclusive. Longer applicable rental minimums still apply.
Are Freedom Campers one-way fees the same in both directions?
No. For a pickup from April to September, Auckland to Christchurch carries a NZ$150 one-way fee, while Christchurch to Auckland has none. From October to March the fees are NZ$250 north to south and NZ$150 south to north. The usual cross-island minimum is 14 days, and the journey also involves a ferry crossing.
Does Freedom Campers’ Option 2 remove all financial liability?
