Freedom Motorhomes is the trading name of McKinnon Group Ltd, a family-run business managed by a husband-and-wife team in the Glasgow area. The rental business began in 2016 as McKinnon Motorhomes and adopted the Freedom Motorhomes name at the end of 2019.
The company hires out its own fleet and takes direct bookings. It also sells motorhomes. Its rental range uses Scottish island names to distinguish the vehicles, with different bed arrangements and sizes behind each name. Vehicle preparation is handled by an in-house team that includes NCC-certified technicians.

Freedom Motorhomes makes a persuasive case for a UK holiday where the living space matters as much as the drive. There is substance behind the choice of layouts, and the handover resources give renters something practical to return to once they are away. The main trade-off is financial: a prepared holiday vehicle still comes with significant responsibility for damage, including cases that fall outside the standard per-event limit.
Good points
- Useful equipment comes with the hire.The standard kit covers cooking, outdoor seating and the equipment needed to connect the vehicle at a campsite. That reduces the number of small additions needed before setting off.
- No mileage allowance to plan around.Unlimited mileage gives UK journeys room for detours without a per-mile allowance governing the itinerary. The permitted driving territory and road restrictions still apply.
- Handover help remains accessible on the trip.Model-specific videos can be saved for offline use. Three Arran customer reviews on Goboony, published between April and August 2026, also describe positive handover or communication experiences; that is a small sample for this particular vehicle.
Things to consider
- Damage responsibility can exceed the security deposit.Certain motorhome damage is fully payable, so the money left at collection does not define the driver's maximum exposure. Reversing and overhead damage deserve particular attention in the rental agreement.
- Peak-season hire starts at a week.The seven-night minimum makes a shorter peak-season break a poor fit, even though three-night hires are offered off-peak.

The fleet spans two-person campervans, compact motorhomes and larger layouts for families, with automatic transmission throughout the current range.
For family groups, the most useful distinction is how the beds divide the interior. Arran has a rear island bed behind a privacy door, while Jura offers rear twin beds. Skye and Rassay use bunks. Bute puts more emphasis on shared living space: its rear U-shaped lounge converts into a large bed at night. These are different ways of using a similar holiday space, so the evening arrangement matters as much as the headline capacity.
Among the two-person options, Canna is a compact coachbuilt motorhome measuring 5.99 m long and 2.15 m wide, with a drop-down double bed and a rear bathroom. Tiree is also 5.99 m long, with twin beds that can become a double. Those twins differ in length, at 203 cm and 175 cm, which is worth factoring into the choice for taller travellers. The 6.36 m Iona has a rear double and pull-out storage underneath.
Bathroom layout is another useful dividing line. Skye, Arran, Jura, Bute, Rassay and Canna have a separate shower area or cubicle. Islay combines the toilet and shower in one room.
Freedom also advertises an Iona 2027 variant based on the Elddis Whirlwind GTV 560. At 5.99 m long, with a 197 × 157 cm rear double, it differs materially from the 2026 Expedition 68. The 2027 announcement is separate from the current Iona category shown above. The rental terms permit a comparable or superior substitute, so a particular bed arrangement should not be treated as guaranteed by the category name alone.

Can five adults hire Skye together?
No. Although Skye has five travel places and sleeps five, both capacities are limited to a maximum of four adults. A five-person party therefore needs to include a child.
Which Freedom Motorhomes vehicles have twin beds?
Jura has rear twin beds as well as an electric drop-down double. For two people, Tiree has twins that can be converted into a double; the individual beds are 203 cm and 175 cm long.
Is the Iona advertised for 2027 the same campervan as the current Iona?
No. The current direct-hire Iona is a 2026 Auto-Trail Expedition 68, while the advertised 2027 variant is an Elddis Whirlwind GTV 560. The model, length and bed dimensions differ. Establish which variant the booking covers before relying on either layout.
Can I take a Freedom Motorhomes vehicle to mainland Europe?
The advertised hire and insurance cover UK travel. The terms require permission to go beyond mainland UK and the Scottish Islands, so a continental route is not included in the standard offer and should not be planned as an automatically permitted extension.
Can I bring two dogs?
