GO Campers review

GO Campers combines locally fitted campervans with a varied range of four-wheel-drive camping vehicles for Iceland.

Background

Company overview

Founded in Iceland in 2014, GO Campers developed from an operation using outsourced conversions of used vans into a business with its own conversion workshop. Designing and fitting the living areas in-house remains part of its operating model; the underlying vehicles come from established manufacturers.

The company is part of Go Rentals, alongside Go Car Rental and Green Motion Iceland. Its rental operation centres on two offices in southwest Iceland: one near Keflavík Airport and another in Reykjavík. The range has expanded beyond small converted vans to include larger living spaces, pop-top campers, rooftop tents and pickup campers.

Our verdict

Editorial review

The strongest part of GO's proposition is the choice between genuinely different ways of camping. Moving through the range changes where you sleep, how much living space you have and how the vehicle works in colder weather, rather than simply adding seats to the same basic design. The offer rewards a considered category choice more than a decision based on the cheapest headline rate.

The rental experience is less uniform than the breadth of the fleet might suggest. Camper reviews describe helpful handovers and effective responses to faults, alongside complaints about preparation and follow-up. The practical appeal is substantial, but the category, booking channel and protection package each need to fit the trip: no single specification or service promise describes the whole range.

Good points

  • A useful middle step between small and large vans. The LITE range adds an indoor living setup to a three-person camper without moving straight to the larger BIG vans. It gives travellers a different living arrangement to compare, rather than making sleeping capacity the only choice.
  • City collection can include a hotel transfer. For eligible Reykjavík bookings, GO offers collection from hotels in seven central postcodes. This can simplify the handover after a city stay, although the separate Reykjavík collection fee still applies.

Things to consider

  • Budget categories come with substantial mileage.SMART Budget vehicles are described as having more than 200,000 km, while BIG Budget vehicles have more than 150,000 km. These are explicitly older choices within the range; their lower-price positioning does not imply the same vehicle age as the newer categories.
  • Preparation has drawn recurring complaints.Several camper customers describe cleaning, equipment or preparation problems in their reviews. Other customers report clean, working campers and useful remedies when something went wrong. The mixed accounts warrant attention to handover and follow-up without establishing how often problems occur across GO's rentals.

GO's fleet spans compact sleeping vans, larger vans with indoor living space and several distinct forms of 4WD camper. The most useful comparisons concern the living arrangement as much as the base vehicle.

The small two-person categories differ substantially in equipment. SMART Budget has neither a night heater nor a cooler. SMART Manual has an electric heater that needs a campsite power connection and also lacks a cooler. ICELAND 2.0 and SMART Automatic add Webasto heating, a leisure battery and an electric cooler. The distinction matters more for a cold-weather trip than the shared two-person capacity.

LITE provides an indoor living setup for three, although GO describes three adults as a tight fit. The larger BIG vans sleep five on two levels; for BIG Budget and BIG Manual, GO recommends a maximum of four for greater comfort. The LUX has a fixed main bed and a narrow secondary bed, giving its three-person capacity a different practical meaning again.

The 4WD choices are not interchangeable. TOP and WRANGLER use rooftop tents, CRUISER has an interior bed, and the California combines a lower bed with a pop-top in its four-person version. XPLORER and PRO use pickup-camper layouts; PRO has two sleeping areas and is positioned for two adults and two children, though it can accommodate four adults. None of these configurations makes the vehicle unrestricted for Iceland's roads.

Practical facts

TopicWhat to know
Daily road chargeGO's rental terms require a **€10.50 charge per rental day**, across routes and insurance choices. This is separate from the vehicle rate; it is not an optional protection product.
Vehicle-price exampleFor a direct Keflavík-to-Keflavík rental from **21 to 28 September 2026**, SMART Manual had a **€571 seven-day vehicle rate** on the pay-now, non-refundable option. That example excludes optional protection and the separately required road charge; it is not a final booking total or an availability promise.
MileageUnlimited mileage is included. Fuel, tolls, parking, entrance fees and damage remain separate, and the permitted-road restrictions still apply.
Driver eligibilityThe ordinary minimum is **20**, with a licence held for at least **one year**. California, WRANGLER, CRUISER, XPLORER, PRO, LUX and BIG categories specify **25**. All drivers must be named on the agreement.
Basic cover and upgradesIn GO's direct offer, Basic is included, with a **€3,500 collision excess** and **€1,000 gravel excess** per separate covered incident. Silver costs **€25/day**, reducing those excesses to **€1,000** and **€250**. Gold costs **€35/day** and Platinum **€50/day**, with **€0 excess for covered collision and gravel incidents**. Excluded damage remains outside that promise; Platinum also adds sand/ash and tyre cover.
Card requirements and holdsFor direct rentals, GO's FAQ requires **Gold or Platinum if no credit card is presented at collection**. The contract can still permit a deposit on request and incident-related card holds: up to **€3,500 for wind-door damage** or **€7,000 for specified uninsured water, underside or sand/ash damage**. A hold is not an ordinary rental fee and does not necessarily cap liability.
Roadside helpRenters have access to a **24/7 guidance line**. **Roadside Protection Plus costs €11/day** in the direct offer and is separate from vehicle insurance, including Platinum. Out-of-hours callouts may require an initial **ISK 12,500 payment** to 24RA, with reimbursement subject to assessment.
CancellationFor GO direct rates cancelled at least **24 hours before the start**, the refundable option returns money and the non-refundable option provides a voucher. A **€10 processing fee** applies when cancellation is within ten days of the start. Within 24 hours, neither refund nor voucher is provided.
Reykjavík collectionCollection costs **€50** and is limited to SMART, ICELAND 2.0 and LITE categories; large and 4WD categories are excluded from this office's offer. Free hotel transfer is available from eligible hotels in postcodes **101, 102, 103, 104, 105, 107 and 108**, arranged with the booking.
Airport shuttleThe Keflavík office is off-airport. The shuttle generally runs about every **20 minutes**, sometimes **20–30**, from the designated arrivals stop. It runs **24/7 in peak season** and **05:00–18:00 off peak**.
Self-service collectionKeflavík self-service requires selection and completed online check-in at least **24 hours before pickup**. Online check-in is limited to direct GO reservations; third-party bookings check in in person.
One-way rentalGO expressly offers collection in **Reykjavík with return at Keflavík**. The category and collection restrictions for Reykjavík still apply.
Road restrictionsGO's **2WD vehicles cannot use F-roads or the additional restricted routes in the agreement**. A 4WD category does not give unrestricted access, and water damage remains the renter's exposure. Prohibited-route use can trigger a **€500 contractual penalty**, in addition to damage costs.
Cold-season equipment**LITE, LUX and BIG running-water systems are disabled in winter**. TOP and WRANGLER rooftop-tent categories are unavailable roughly October–May. The California two-person winter category uses the lower bed rather than offering four sleeping places.
Cooking equipmentCooking basics include a stove, cookware, utensils and dinnerware for the booked occupants.
BeddingThin fleece blankets are not a substitute for sleeping bedding. LUX includes a duvet; other categories require paid bedding or the renter's own supplies. In the direct seven-day SMART quote above, a sleeping bag cost **€22 per rental** and a duvet-and-pillow package **€30 per rental**.
Optional equipmentIn that same direct SMART quote, Wi-Fi cost **€15/day**, an additional driver **€9/day**, and a chair **€10 per rental**. These are optional items, not automatic inclusions or prices established for every booking.
Return fuelThe recorded pickup fuel level controls the return requirement. Missing fuel is charged plus a **€30 service fee**. Roadside Protection Plus may waive that service fee, but not the cost of the missing fuel.
Cleaning and smokingExcessive dirt can incur **€50 for a small camper or €100 for a large one**; smoking or its smell can incur **€300**.
Return timingAllow about **30 minutes** for return inspection, potentially **60 minutes if there is damage**, plus airport-transfer time. A return at least 60 minutes late can result in another rental day's charge.

More about the company

A tailored itinerary before departure

GO offers a paid planning service built around a post-booking questionnaire. The result is a personalised PDF itinerary and Google Map, priced at **€30 per trip day**. It requires at least **seven days' notice** and becomes non-refundable after delivery, making it a service to arrange before arrival rather than an on-demand route consultation.

The company also provides themed planning maps and separate campsite maps for summer and year-round use. These offer another way to plan independently without buying a personalised itinerary.

Quick answers

GO Campers FAQ

Which GO campers use Webasto rather than a campsite-powered heater?

ICELAND 2.0, SMART Automatic, LITE, the California categories, CRUISER, XPLORER, PRO, LUX and BIG have Webasto heating. SMART Manual instead relies on an electric heater connected to campsite power. SMART Budget, TOP and WRANGLER have no night heater. A heated model does not necessarily have running water in winter: GO disables it in LITE, LUX and BIG.

Can I collect any GO camper in Reykjavík?

No. Reykjavík collection is limited to SMART, ICELAND 2.0 and LITE, with a €50 collection fee. GO's larger and 4WD categories use the Keflavík operation. The free transfer from eligible Reykjavík hotels does not remove the collection fee.

Can I use GO's KeyBox if I book through another company?

GO limits online check-in to reservations made directly through its own website. Third-party bookings require an in-person check-in. For an eligible direct reservation at Keflavík, self-service must be selected and online check-in completed at least 24 hours before pickup.

Does the GO CRUISER's snorkel remove liability for water damage?

No. Water damage remains the renter's responsibility. The CRUISER's snorkel does not remove that exposure or give unrestricted route permission; GO's agreement and the restrictions for the booked vehicle still apply.

Can the five-seat TOP or XPLORER sleep five people?

No. TOP has five travel seats but sleeps two. XPLORER also has five travel seats, while GO describes its sleeping capacity as “2½”. PRO is a different pickup-camper category with four sleeping places. Travel-seat capacity cannot be used as the overnight group size for these vehicles.

Does GO's Platinum package include Roadside Protection Plus?

No. Platinum is a vehicle-protection option, while Roadside Protection Plus is a separate €11-per-day add-on in the direct offer. The 24/7 guidance line is available to renters, but access to guidance does not make every rescue or callout free.

Will GO refund a non-refundable direct booking if I cancel early?

Its non-refundable direct rate provides a voucher when cancelled at least 24 hours before the rental starts; the refundable rate provides a monetary refund. The €10 processing fee applies within ten days of the start. With less than 24 hours remaining, neither option provides a refund or voucher.
