Karen & Co. designs and builds campers in Ballymoney, combining its own rental operation with conversion work for other owners. Its beginnings trace back to a self-built bus, Karen the Convoy, and a Sahara journey in 2018. Building vehicles for others grew out of that experience.

The hire range retains that workshop identity: each camper has a name and its own layout. The business is centred on one Northern Irish base, with different travel permissions for its Classic and Premium ranges.

The appeal here lies in how much choice there is within a fairly focused kind of hire. Couples can keep the layout simple, while several larger conversions give families a different arrangement of beds and travel seats. Premium adds comforts that matter beyond appearance, making the step up useful for a longer stay in the van.

The main compromise is flexibility. The choice of range affects where the trip can go, and every hire has to fit the same collection and return base. This is a proposition to match to a planned journey: selecting the cheapest or most appealing interior first can leave the wrong operating limits attached to it.

Good points

  • Practical equipment in Premium..Diesel heating, insulation and a memory-foam mattress give this range a more comfortable starting point for spending evenings and nights in the camper.

  • Classic narrows the itinerary..Travel is restricted to Northern Ireland and Donegal, with restricted mileage. The lower nightly rates therefore need to be weighed against the route itself.

The fleet centres on converted vans and minibuses with individual interiors. Classic includes the rustic LDV conversions and Kathleen's Mercedes Sprinter, while Premium uses Ford Transits with a wider spread of sleeping arrangements.

For two people, several vans combine three travel seats with a double sleeping capacity. Keeva adds a small single bed to make three berths. Klaudia's double bed and twin pull-out sofa provide a four-berth alternative; Kitty and Kerry add an overhead bunk and have an Isofix point. The number of travel seats and the composition of the beds are separate choices, particularly for a family with children of different ages.

Both ranges provide cooking facilities, kitchenware, a sink, a 12 V cool box and leisure-battery power. Premium also includes USB/USB-C connections and its heating and insulation package. Classic does not have the Premium diesel heater. Kevin uses a portable stove, so its cooking arrangement differs from Ken's built-in gas stove.

There are useful differences within Premium too. Kit has a standing height of 6 ft 2 in, while Kirk adds cruise control and a multimedia screen. Those details help distinguish vans with otherwise similar travel and sleeping capacities.

No. Karen & Co.'s Classic range is restricted to Northern Ireland and Donegal. For a journey around the wider island of Ireland, the Premium range has the appropriate travel area and unlimited mileage.

Can I collect the camper at Belfast or Dublin airport?

Collection takes place at the Ballymoney base. Transfers from Belfast City, Belfast International and Dublin airports can be arranged beforehand, but those airports are not additional rental locations. A free arranged transfer is also available from Ballymoney railway station.

Which Karen & Co. campers have room for a family?

Klaudia and Kathleen have five travel seats and sleep up to four; Kathleen's bunk is for two children or one adult. Kitty and Kerry have five travel seats and a maximum of five berths, including an overhead bunk designed for two children or one adult; both also have an Isofix point. Keeva offers three travel seats and three sleeping places, with a small additional single bed.

Are the Classic campers heated like the Premium vans?
