Maui is part of Tourism Holdings Limited, the tourism group known as thl. It rents motorhomes in Australia and New Zealand, where thl positions it as a premium brand within its rental business. Customers hire a Maui vehicle through an operation whose depots and services are shared with other thl brands.
The brand dates its beginnings to 1982. thl acquired maui Rental Campervans in 1988, alongside Mount Cook’s motorhome fleet. The group’s later combination with Apollo Tourism & Leisure in 2022 expanded the wider rental business and shared infrastructure behind the brand.

Editorial review
Maui puts more emphasis on the standard of the accommodation than on offering every kind of camping vehicle. That gives its range a clear focus: the choice is largely about how you want to sleep and live on board. We regard the product as a credible comfort-led option, while the service record gives us less confidence in a uniformly polished experience from collection to the handling of problems during a trip.
Good points
- A defined limit on vehicle age.The standard fleet has a stated age ceiling, with a younger Elite option for travellers who place extra value on recency.
- Bathrooms throughout the range.Choosing the two-person category still gives you your own toilet and shower. Those facilities are part of maui’s offer at every capacity, rather than an upgrade reserved for its larger motorhomes.
- Helpful depot teams.Staff receive repeated praise on Trustpilot for friendly service and clear explanations at collection.
Things to consider
- Uneven vehicle preparation.Repeated customer reports describe incomplete cleaning, missing equipment and faults with water systems, fridges or habitation batteries. These are meaningful shortcomings for accommodation sold at the premium end of the market, although they do not describe every rental.
- Inconsistent follow-up.Customer experiences of help during the trip and subsequent complaint handling are mixed. Delays and disagreements over compensation recur in the feedback, so the availability of an assistance line does not by itself establish the quality of the resolution.

Sleeping arrangements
Ultima centres on a fixed rear double bed for two adults. Ultima Plus adds a narrow front single for a child, giving a family of three a different layout without moving to a four-berth category.
For four travellers, the main distinction is the position of the beds. Cascade pairs a drop-down double with a second double made up from the dinette. Beach has an overcab double and a rear double, in a larger body. Cascade’s drop-down bed has a 200 kg weight limit. In Australia, Cascade is offered only through 31 March 2027 and is not available as Cascade Elite.
River, and Australia’s Sunset, add a third sleeping area for up to six people. One double is made up from the dinette and is smaller than the other beds, so the dining area needs to be converted each night when all six berths are in use.
Standard or maui Elite
For 2026–27, maui describes its standard Australian vehicles as up to two years on the road and its New Zealand vehicles as having spent up to two and a half years in the fleet. The optional maui Elite upgrade guarantees a vehicle with less than one year in the fleet, where offered, for an additional charge.
Elite sets a limit on time in the fleet; it does not guarantee a particular chassis, model, year of manufacture or floorplan. Both standard and Elite rentals are booked by category. Dimensions and bed measurements can vary between units, so a particular measurement should be confirmed for the booking if it determines whether the vehicle will work for you.
Differences between countries
Matching category names do not mean identical interiors. For example, the Australian River’s Elite specification has a 90-litre fresh-water tank and a 148–188-litre fridge, compared with 82 litres and 130 litres respectively in New Zealand. Those differences matter when choosing how much food and water to carry.
In New Zealand, every category has diesel heating in the living area, a rack for up to two non-electric bicycles and self-contained certification. In Australia, living-area air conditioning and heating can require a 240 V connection; solar panels do not run the air conditioning independently of the mains.
