Company overview

McRent started in Germany in 2004 and expanded into France in 2007, followed by Spain, Portugal, Italy and the Netherlands in 2008. The business subsequently spread into northern Europe and opened in Auckland and Christchurch in 2017, taking its European rental model to New Zealand.

The brand belongs to Rental Alliance, part of Erwin Hymer Group, which is wholly owned by THOR Industries. Rental Alliance manages McRent's franchise network, bringing together McRent companies and local partners. Your rental contract is with the depot or partner named in the booking.

Editorial review

McRent's offer is strongest when the motorhome itself is central to the holiday. The kitchens and bathrooms found across much of the fleet are complemented by electrical connection and levelling equipment in the general rental package. Motorhomeland sees that combination as particularly well suited to holidays spent moving between campsites: the vehicle provides the living space, and the rental package helps with setting up at each stop.

Good points

A choice of starting points within key markets.With 35 depots in Germany and 19 in Spain, McRent offers alternatives to a single gateway city in both countries. That gives travellers more scope to match the pickup point to their arrival plans.
Driving can be shared.A second driver is part of McRent's general rental inclusions, making it easier for two people to take turns at the wheel without an extra driver charge.
Roomier options for two.The range includes motorhomes with only two berths as well as smaller campervans. Couples can choose more living space without having to move into a vehicle designed around sleeping a larger party.

Things to consider

Limits on carrying bicycles.McRent's standard bike racks are not suitable for e-bikes. Premium Plus and Premium Luxury do not have the rack because they have a garage; anyone planning to bring bicycles needs to establish whether the chosen vehicle can carry them.

McRent's fleet runs from compact pop-top vans to fully integrated motorhomes, with much of the choice in between devoted to self-contained touring vehicles. Sleeping capacities across the range run from two to six.

Urban, Compact, Family, Comfort and Premium are commercial ranges, not a simple ladder of body sizes or equipment levels. Urban includes both the smaller Urban Standard and panel van campers. Compact spans low-profile and fully integrated motorhomes, while the Family range combines low-profile and overcab designs. Comfort and Premium also mix body styles, so the physical vehicle type is more useful than the range name alone when narrowing the choice.

The bathroom is a clear dividing line at the smaller end. Urban Standard has neither a toilet nor a shower, and a kitchenette is not standard across every unit. Urban Plus adds a kitchen and bathroom in a panel van format. The motorhome ranges also have kitchen and bathroom facilities, although a separate shower or a particular bed layout should not be assumed from the group name.

There are meaningful local differences. Family Plus accommodates six people in Spain and Portugal, but five in the other markets where it is offered. Family Luxury has six travel seats and six berths in Spain, Iceland, New Zealand and Portugal, and five of each in its other markets. The UK-Camper range adds Elddis motorhomes in Great Britain, Portugal has EcoLine options, and New Zealand has the Kiwi Compact. These local groups broaden the choice without making every McRent category available at every depot.

Mileage	Unlimited mileage is part of McRent's general offer. Special offers and promotions can set a distance limit, so a discounted rental may have a different allowance.
Campsite equipment	General inclusions cover levelling wedges, a CEE electrical cable and cable reel, toilet chemical, a water hose or container, and a safety kit.
Gas	The general package provides two gas bottles, one full and one already in use. McRent excludes its Urban Vehicle/Urban Standard offer from this provision.
Awning	An awning is included in the general offer, except on Urban Standard.
Air conditioning	Cab air conditioning is included in the general rental package.
Exterior cleaning	Exterior cleaning is included in the general rental package. Interior-cleaning requirements are set by the local rental terms.
Online check-in	Eligible bookings can complete the advance check-in using the booking number and pickup date. McRent says this can save up to 30 minutes at collection.
Handover	In Germany and Great Britain, collection includes a document check, an explanation of the vehicle and a record of its condition.
Breakdown assistance	McRent offers the manufacturer's mobility assistance around the clock. In New Zealand, the roadside assistance provision covers mechanical breakdowns, with exclusions set out in the local rental terms.
Heavier Premium vehicles	Premium Standard has a stated gross weight of 4.25 tonnes, Premium Plus 5 tonnes and Premium Luxury 5.4 tonnes. These groups are offered in Germany, with Premium Standard also in Poland. Eligibility needs to be checked against the vehicle's weight and the licence requirements for the rental country and journey.
