Company overview

Rent Easy launched with 11 German locations in January 2016 and expanded through a network of authorised dealers. Local operating companies provide the rentals, so the company named in the rental contract depends on the pickup station. Rent Easy belongs to Rental Alliance alongside McRent and CROSSRENT, within Erwin Hymer Group, which is part of THOR Industries.

The vehicle offer draws on brands including Hymer, Carado, Etrusco, Bürstner and Laika. Rent Easy advertises an average vehicle age of about five months and replacement by 24 months; that describes its fleet policy rather than the age of a particular vehicle at collection.

Rent Easy has announced that it will become McRent on 16 November 2026. The change is still ahead, with continuity arrangements for existing bookings.

Rent Easy offers considerable room to choose between different ways of travelling in a motorhome, particularly for a German pickup. Its range reaches beyond a simple small-or-large choice, while the dealer handover gives renters time to learn the vehicle before setting off. The proposition works best when a category booking provides enough certainty about the trip’s essential requirements.

The practical commitment is to a particular station and rental agreement. Collection windows, mileage allowances and extras can make two Rent Easy bookings quite different experiences to plan. A good fit therefore depends on the chosen vehicle category and departure point together, rather than the brand name alone.

Good points

Extra drivers without an extra-driver fee.Additional drivers can be registered at pickup without a separate driver charge. This makes sharing the driving easier to budget for, although each driver must meet the applicable eligibility requirements.
Unlimited mileage at selected stations.Iceland and Athens include unlimited mileage. Berlin and Limassol also remove their daily mileage limit for rentals longer than 14 days, which is useful for a longer trip with substantial driving.
A handover with time to learn the vehicle.The dealer model includes a personal introduction, with about an hour recommended for collection. This gives the renter a dedicated opportunity to understand the vehicle’s controls and equipment before departure.

Things to consider

German cancellations become expensive well before departure.The cancellation charge reaches half the rental price from 49 days before pickup under the German terms. This is a substantial commitment for a trip whose dates are still uncertain.
Some pickup windows leave little room for a delayed arrival.Berlin’s weekday collection slot runs only from 15:30 to 16:30. The station is in Königs Wusterhausen, so an arrival plan needs to allow for the onward journey as well as the handover.

Rent Easy’s range extends from compact pop-top campervans to large overcab and fully integrated motorhomes. In Germany, differences within each category family matter as much as differences between them.

CITY Classic is the compact choice with no onboard toilet. CITY Extra favours a two-person sleeping layout, while CITY First adds a pop-top roof and room for four to sleep. ACTIVE moves into motorhomes, but its name does not identify one body style: Classic and Extra are low-profile vehicles, while First is fully integrated.

For a family, the distinction between travel seats and beds is particularly important. FAMILY Extra and FAMILY First both sleep six but have only five travel seats. PREMIUM Extra supplies six of each, in a much larger example measuring 8.86 metres and weighing up to 5,000 kg. The higher sleeping capacity of a FAMILY category does not make it suitable for six people travelling together.

Weight also separates vehicles that might appear similar on a shortlist. ACTIVE First is specified at 3,500 kg, whereas EXCLUSIVE Extra and First are 4,430 kg. The latter therefore fall under Germany’s heavier-vehicle driver requirements. The ADVENTURE-4x4 name describes a vehicle variant; it does not grant permission to drive off road.

The Iceland selection includes distinct FAMILY_Classic Automatic and FAMILY_Classic 5Pax variants. A four-person party can choose the expressly automatic category; the five-person variant provides an additional travel seat and sleeping place, without an established transmission specification. Under the German rental terms, bookings are for a category: a replacement in the same or a higher category may be supplied, and a lower category entails an adjustment to the rental-price difference.

The policies, costs and services below are scoped by country or pickup station where stated.

Topic	What to know
Rental-price basis in Germany	Seasonal rental prices are charged for each commenced 24-hour period, with a one-off service fee. A category price alone is therefore not the complete rental cost.
Payment schedule in Germany	The advance payment is 30% of the rental price, with a minimum of EUR 300 per booking. It counts towards the price. The balance is due 40 days before departure, or immediately for a shorter-notice booking.
Security deposit	Germany requires EUR 2,000 per rental at pickup; Iceland requires EUR 2,800 per rental. These are refundable security amounts, subject to return and settlement, rather than extra rental charges.
Damage excess	The ordinary excess is EUR 2,000 per damage event in Germany and EUR 2,800 per loss or event in Iceland. These amounts are separate from the security deposit and do not cap every possible liability. German exclusions include specified misuse and renter-caused damage to interior equipment; Icelandic terms allocate undercarriage, axle, rim and tyre damage to the renter and make protection subject to weather instructions.
Driver eligibility	In Germany, drivers must be at least 21 and have held their licence for one year. For vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, the requirements rise to age 25 and three years with the appropriate licence. Original documents are required. Greece, Cyprus and Italy require three years’ licence tenure even for the standard age-21 category; their heavier-vehicle rule is age 25 with a class C licence held for three years.
Additional drivers	Additional drivers can be registered at pickup without an extra-driver fee.
Mileage	Berlin and Limassol include 250 km per day, becoming unlimited for rentals longer than 14 days. Iceland and Athens include unlimited mileage.
Minimum rental	The general minimum is five to ten days, depending on season. Iceland applies a seven- to fourteen-day seasonal minimum, with shorter rentals on request.
Winter rentals	The Iceland station does not offer rentals from November through March. Athens and Limassol offer winter rentals.
Collection and return	Berlin: Monday–Friday pickup 15:30–16:30, return 09:00–09:30. Iceland: daily pickup 08:00–18:00 and return 08:00–17:00 during the rental season. Allow about an hour for the handover.
Iceland road charge	A compulsory EUR 10 per day applies from 1 January 2026. Unlimited mileage does not include this charge.
Keflavík Airport transfer	The Iceland station offers an optional transfer for EUR 90 per direction, per rental. Vehicle handover takes place at the Hafnarfjörður depot, about 36 km from the airport.
Bedding and equipment	In Iceland, optional bedding costs EUR 59 per person per rental, towels EUR 25 per person per rental, and dishes EUR 55 per rental. Berlin charges EUR 59 per bedding set per rental. The different charging bases matter when budgeting for a group.
Pets	Berlin and Athens accept pets by prior request for EUR 150 per rental. Pets are prohibited at Iceland and Limassol.
Smoking	German vehicles are non-smoking.
Cancellation in Germany	Cancellation 50 or more days before pickup costs EUR 300. At 49–15 days it costs 50% of the rental price, with a EUR 300 minimum; at fewer than 15 days, 80%; and on the pickup day or for a no-show, 95%. The terms allow proof that the loss was lower or that no loss occurred.
Cancellation in Iceland	At least 60 days before pickup, the charge is EUR 100. At 59–50 days it is 30% of the rental price, with a EUR 100 minimum; at 49–15 days, 50%; at fewer than 15 days, 80%; and on pickup day, 95%. A lower-loss or no-loss provision applies.
Return cleaning in Germany	Failure to meet the interior-cleaning obligation can cost at least EUR 180; failure to empty the toilet can cost at least EUR 250. These are conditional charges, with actual-expenditure and lower-loss provisions, rather than routine additions to every rental.
Refuelling in Germany	If the return fuel requirements are not met, the charge is the fuel cost plus EUR 60. Fuel and AdBlue return obligations apply.
One-way rentals	German one-way rentals require special agreement.
Cross-border trips	For German rentals, travel within Europe is subject to restrictions; travel outside Europe requires approval, and war or crisis zones are prohibited. Iceland rentals cannot be taken abroad.
Optional excess protection	The ERGO product offered through Rent Easy is available to residents of Germany, Belgium, Denmark, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Austria, Poland and the Czech Republic, for rentals lasting no more than 93 days. Eligibility depends on residence, not simply the pickup country.
Berlin winter service	A compulsory EUR 99 per rental applies for the winter-service period from 10 November 2026 to 31 March 2027. This period spans the announced move to McRent.

The move to McRent

For existing bookings, Rent Easy’s announced transition arrangements retain the booking, price, rental conditions, packages, extras and payments. The pickup location and contact stay the same unless the renter is notified otherwise.

New McRent documents and a new booking number will be issued, but customers are not asked to rebook or enter a new contract. Vouchers remain subject to their original terms. These arrangements are announced for the change on 16 November 2026.
