Rent.is began in 2012 as an Iceland camper rental business. Rent Nordic ehf operates the company, with its rental base in Keflavík and an airport transfer linking the office to international arrivals. Editorial review
Rent.is rewards a clear idea of how you want to camp. Its vehicles offer materially different combinations of indoor space, heating, power and road access, so the choice can be tailored quite closely to the trip. The important distinction is the complete camping setup: an automatic transmission or familiar model name does not, by itself, tell you how the living area will work.
That choice comes with some demanding boundaries. Winter can take water facilities out of service even in a bathroom-equipped vehicle, and paid protection leaves substantial exclusions in place. The offer is most convincing when the selected category, season and route align; comfort and flexibility cannot be assumed across the range.

Small vans: pay attention to the heating setup
The Doblo models combine a fixed bed with portable cooking equipment. Their portable heater and cooler need campsite electricity. The Kangoo category uses Webasto heating and an auxiliary electrical supply, a meaningful difference for two people choosing how much to rely on a campsite hookup. The Caddys use a convertible bed and Webasto heat; Rent.is specifies roughly three to four hours of driving a day to recharge their heater battery.
The Trafic moves up to a wider convertible sleeping area, while the Master 5 uses stacked double beds in a larger panel van. In the automatic Trafic, all three passengers travel in the belted front seats; the rear dinette is living space, not an extra travel seat.
Four sleepers can mean very different accommodation
California variants pair a lower bed with sleeping space in the lifting roof. The 2017–2018 4×4, 2024 Beach 4WD and 2026 Hybrid are distinct categories, including different travel-seat capacities and road permissions. The Hilux has an enclosed camper body on a pickup, with a fixed double bed and a second bed made from the dinette.
Crosscamp Flex 541 offers an indoor kitchen and two sleeping levels but no toilet or shower. Lux 600 adds an indoor bathroom, a larger fridge and water tanks. Motorhome 3 accommodates three sleepers despite having four travel seats; Motorhome 4 has four sleeping places and rear ISOFIX fittings. Its table must be removed when installing a child seat.
Roof tents trade indoor living for a different vehicle format
Duster, Renegade and Jimny categories sleep two in their roof tents; the Wrangler category sleeps four. The Duster and Renegade have no built-in heating for the camping accommodation. A five-seat SUV can therefore still be a two-person sleeping choice, and the tent-equipped vehicles do not provide the enclosed living room of a campervan. Four-wheel drive also remains separate from permission to use a particular road.

Is Rent.is collection inside Keflavík Airport?
Vehicle handover takes place at the Rent.is office at Flugvellir 22. The company provides a free 24/7 transfer from airport arrivals, with an approximate five-minute drive to the base. The arrivals meeting point is not a separate rental depot.
Which Rent.is campers can take five people?
The Renault Master 5 has five travel seats and five sleeping places. The older VW California 4×4 and Toyota Hilux have five travel seats but sleep four, while the Duster and Renegade have five travel seats but sleep two. Use both capacities when choosing for a group.
Do the Doblo and Kangoo campers have the same heating?
No. The Doblo models use a portable heater that needs campsite electricity. The Kangoo category has Webasto heating with an auxiliary power supply. That difference matters even though both categories accommodate two people.
Can the 2026 California Hybrid use the same roads as the 2024 Beach 4WD?
No. The 2026 Hybrid excludes F-roads and the Highlands. The 2024 Beach 4WD is restricted to easier routes, with no river crossings; Rent.is discourages F249 and harder sections of F208 for that category. The shared California name does not give them the same permissions.
Can the Crosscamp Flex 541 go towards Landmannalaugar?
Rent.is allows this 2WD category on road 208 towards Landmannalaugar only up to the river before the campsite. It must not cross that river. The permission also names roads 35/Kjölur and 550/Kaldidalur; it is a limited exception, not approval for all Highland roads.
Will a Rent.is motorhome's bathroom work in winter?
The Lux 600 and Motorhome 4 have a toilet and indoor shower, but these facilities are unavailable in winter. The Master 5 and Hilux also have winter sink restrictions. Heating and fitted water facilities are separate considerations when choosing one of these categories for a winter rental.
Does Platinum protection remove every deposit and damage charge?
No. Platinum waives the 450,000 ISK damage security, but the separate 15,000 ISK fines security remains. Its zero liability is limited to covered damage: exclusions still apply, including water, wind-opened doors, underside/interior damage and assistance.
Does unlimited mileage include Rent.is's road charge?
No. For pickups from 1 January 2026, Rent.is collects a separate 1,550 ISK per rental day in advance. Unlimited mileage does not make that charge disappear; a ten-day rental adds 15,500 ISK under this rule.
Can I cancel a direct Rent.is booking the day before collection?
A direct booking qualifies for a full refund when cancellation is made at least 24 hours before pickup. The exact collection time matters: a later cancellation or no-show costs the full rental amount, and an early return is not refunded.
