Roadsurfer was founded in Munich in 2016 and began with 25 Volkswagen camping buses across Munich, Frankfurt and Hamburg. France became its first documented international market in 2019, followed by expansion into North America from Los Angeles in 2022.

The company now operates a professionally managed rental fleet across Europe, the United States and Canada, alongside selected used-vehicle sales and longer-term subscriptions in some markets. Its separate Roadsurfer Spots business is a marketplace for campsites and private pitches rather than an extension of the rental-station network.

Roadsurfer's fleet combines European pop-top campers and motorhomes with North American campervans and Class C vehicles.

The European range

Six compact categories retain pop-top sleeping space. Camper Cabin Deluxe adds a toilet, while Road House, Family Finca and the Cottage range offer an interior bathroom. Low-profile motorhomes provide a further choice of living and sleeping layouts.

North American vehicles

Couple Condo, Liberty Lodge and Horizon Hopper are Class B campervans. Family Freedom is a Class C motorhome with five travel seats and five berths. The North American categories have automatic transmission and onboard bathrooms.

The Offroad name and references to all-wheel drive describe vehicle equipment; they do not give permission to leave the roads allowed by the rental agreement.

The inclusions, processes and booking details that are specific to a Roadsurfer rental.

Topic	What to know
Mileage	Standard rentals include unlimited mileage. In Europe, a written booking exception can change this allowance; Roadsurfer Rally relocation rentals instead use the mileage allowance and excess-distance rate attached to that offer.
Second driver	A registered second driver is included. The UK protection-package comparison allows two drivers with Basic, three with Plus and an unlimited number with Max. All must meet the age, licence and document requirements for the pickup country.
Included equipment	Current guidance lists navigation, cab air conditioning, heater, a table, two chairs, gas, a power cable or adapter and a water container. European rentals also list an awning and levelling ramps; Wi-Fi is not included.
Security deposit	Roadsurfer lists deposits of GBP 1,200 in the UK, EUR 1,100 at euro-denominated European stations, CHF 1,300 in Switzerland, SEK 12,000 in Sweden, NOK 15,500 in Norway, USD 1,600 in the USA and CAD 2,200 in Canada. This is refundable security, subject to justified deductions, rather than part of the rental price or the damage excess. The agreed deposit must be available at pickup.
One-way rentals	Selected station pairs allow one-way rentals for an extra fee. The UK pricing page advertises domestic USA one-way rentals from GBP 249 per rental; this is a GBP display price, not a USD tariff. A pickup in the USA and return in Canada, or the reverse, is not permitted.
Pets	Add the dog option when booking an eligible vehicle. The UK pricing page advertises it from GBP 119 per rental as a one-off charge. It does not remove the return-cleaning requirements, and additional cleaning charges can still apply.
Pickup process	Online check-in opens seven days before pickup and includes the category tutorial. At the station, activate the Pick-up Pass, present original documents for every driver and complete the equipment and condition checks. Record existing damage before departure; the signed rental agreement and damage report are sent by email.
Returning the vehicle	The return checklist opens two days before drop-off. Clean the interior, empty the grey-water tank and toilet where fitted, and follow the personalised fuel and fluid instructions before digital return check-in. A full exterior wash is not required. The initial inspection may take up to 20 minutes depending on station traffic, with a detailed inspection possible afterwards.
On-road assistance	Around-the-clock assistance covers vehicle breakdowns and accidents. Roadsurfer Support handles office hours and the manufacturer mobility service takes over outside them; the number appears in the customer account after pickup. This service does not cover every kitchen, water or electrical camping-equipment problem. Reimbursement requests go through the account with supporting documents.
Starting rental prices	Roadsurfer's UK pricing page lists European categories from GBP 49 per night for Beach Hostel, GBP 50 for Surfer Suite and GBP 69 for Camper Castle. These are advertised starting rates before fees, without a selected pickup station or travel dates. Duration, timing and pickup location affect the quoted price.
Booking and travel fees	Direct European bookings add a booking fee and a travel fee to the rent and selected extras. The booking fee varies with duration and is capped from ten nights; the UK pricing page advertises the travel fee from GBP 50 per rental, depending on country and vehicle. The travel fee covers preparation, logistics and handover. Published en-GB prices under the European terms include applicable VAT.
Driver eligibility	The minimum age is 18 in continental Europe, with at least one year of driving-licence experience. It rises to 21 in Ireland, the USA and Canada, still with one year of experience. UK pickups require age 21 and two years of licence experience. Licence class and any international driving permit depend on vehicle weight, issuing country and pickup jurisdiction.
Damage excess and protection	The UK protection-package comparison lists damage excesses of GBP 2,500 per claim with Basic, GBP 700 with Plus and GBP 130 with Max. These are the GBP examples in that comparison, not worldwide excess amounts, package prices or security deposits. Cover remains subject to the applicable contract; exclusions include roof and awning damage, incorrect filling of water or fuel tanks, and prohibited driving.
Payment and Flex	For direct European bookings, the rent, booked extras and fees are normally payable in full immediately. With the paid Flex option booked more than 60 days before pickup, 50% is due immediately and the balance 60 days before pickup. A Flex booking made within 60 days is payable in full immediately.
Cancellation	For direct European bookings without Flex, cancellation more than 48 hours before pickup returns only the travel fee. With paid Flex, cancellation at least 21 days before pickup qualifies for a refund excluding the booking fee, or rebooking; separately booked equipment is subject to its own non-refundable rule. Closer to pickup, only the travel fee is refundable outside the final 48-hour window. Cancellation within that final window receives no refund under the contractual schedule. These conditions do not remove statutory rights.
Changing dates or returning early	Under the direct European terms, a lower replacement price is refunded when a booking is changed at least 60 days before pickup without Flex, or at least 14 days before pickup with Flex. Inside those thresholds, a lower price does not produce a refund or voucher; a higher replacement price remains payable. Shortening a rental is treated as a partial cancellation. Voluntary early return does not earn a partial rental refund.
Deposit payment and release	European pickups accept credit, debit or EC cards for the deposit; USA and Canada pickups accept Mastercard or Visa credit or debit cards. After an undamaged return, credit-card clearing can take up to 30 days and debit-card refunds six to eight weeks. Hidden damage may be identified within 48 hours, and justified extra costs or an accident with unresolved responsibility can delay or reduce the return of the deposit.
Extra cleaning charges	The cleaning table on the UK pricing page lists GBP 65 per case for mattress stains, non-water seat stains or other heavy cleaning; GBP 135 for pet hair when the dog option was not booked; and GBP 220 for smoke. These are the table’s GBP charges, subject to the station’s applicable terms. Self-cleaning is an alternative only if it does not disrupt the next booking; prohibited conduct can attract additional charges.
Minimum rental length	The minimum rental is generally three to seven nights, depending on the location and season. The booking calendar gives the minimum for the selected trip.
Pickup and return slots	The UK booking guidance schedules handovers Monday to Saturday, excluding public holidays; the selected station determines the available slots. Pickup before 14:00 or a booked return after 11:00 can carry an extra charge.
Winter rentals in Canada	From November to March, Canadian vehicles have winterized water systems: the water tank must stay empty, and the tap, shower and toilet cannot be used. This seasonal restriction applies even to a category that normally has an onboard bathroom. Calgary operates seasonally.
Driving restrictions	North American rentals cannot travel into Mexico, and Death Valley is prohibited from 1 June to 30 September. USA–Canada round trips may be permitted under the booking conditions, but cross-border one-way returns are not. An Offroad or all-wheel-drive vehicle name does not override restrictions on driving off paved roads.
Optional equipment	Bedding and Kitchen Box utensils and crockery are optional extras. Depending on category, station and dates, additional chairs, child seats, bicycle or roof racks, a portable toilet and snow chains can also be booked separately. A vehicle with a fitted kitchen does not automatically include the Kitchen Box.

Pickup and return

The customer account supports online check-in, category tutorials and the Pick-up Pass before collection. At the station, documents, equipment and existing condition are recorded before the keys are handed over.

A personalised return checklist appears before drop-off. The initial handback can be followed by a more detailed inspection, so the signed condition records remain useful after leaving the station.

Roadsurfer Spots

Roadsurfer rent is the vehicle-rental business. Roadsurfer spots is a separate marketplace for campsites and private overnight pitches.

A pitch listing is not evidence of a rental station, and a vehicle booking does not include an overnight stay. The two services can complement the same trip but should be compared and booked separately.

The self-contained panel vans, low-profile motorhomes and North American categories list a bathroom. Most compact pop-top campers do not have a fixed toilet or hot interior shower.

Are automatic vehicles available?

Yes. Compact and North American categories currently list automatic transmission; several European panel vans and motorhomes can be manual or automatic.

Is mileage unlimited?

Yes, standard Roadsurfer rentals include unlimited mileage. Roadsurfer Rally relocation offers are different: they come with a specified allowance and an excess-distance rate. A written exception in a European booking can also limit the standard allowance.

Is a second driver included?

A second registered driver is currently advertised as included, subject to the applicable age, licence and documentation rules.

Can I rent one way?

Yes, on selected routes with an additional fee. The UK pricing page gives a starting example of GBP 249 per rental for a domestic USA one-way trip. You cannot collect in the USA and return in Canada, or collect in Canada and return in the USA.

Can I cross international borders?

European rentals allow travel to many EU and Schengen destinations within the permitted-country rules. In North America, a USA–Canada round trip may be allowed under the booking conditions, but crossing the border for a one-way return is not. Travel into Mexico is prohibited.

What is included?

Core camping equipment is currently included, but Wi-Fi is not. Bedding, kitchen boxes and other extras may be chargeable.

What happens when I return the vehicle?

Use the return checklist, available two days before drop-off, to clean the interior, empty applicable waste tanks and meet the fuel and fluid requirements. Complete digital return check-in at the station. A later detailed inspection can follow the first check, and qualifying cleaning, fuel or damage costs may be charged afterwards.

How much is the Roadsurfer security deposit?

It depends on the pickup country and is separate from the rental price and damage excess. Listed amounts include GBP 1,200 in the UK, EUR 1,100 at euro-denominated European stations, USD 1,600 in the USA and CAD 2,200 in Canada. The agreed security must be available on an accepted card at pickup and is refundable subject to justified deductions.

What does Roadsurfer Flex change for a European booking?

Flex is a paid option. When booked more than 60 days before pickup, it splits payment into 50% immediately and 50% at the 60-day point. It also allows cancellation at least 21 days before pickup with a refund excluding the booking fee, or rebooking; separately booked equipment has its own non-refundable rule. Shorter-notice cancellation follows the applicable refund schedule.

Can I bring a dog in a Roadsurfer rental?

Yes, with the dog option added to an eligible booking. The UK pricing page advertises a one-off starting charge of GBP 119 per rental. You still need to meet the return-cleaning requirements, and extra cleaning may be charged.

Can I use the bathroom in a Canadian Roadsurfer rental in winter?

Not during the November-to-March winterization period. Roadsurfer requires the water tank to remain empty, leaving the tap, shower and toilet unavailable even in bathroom-equipped vehicles. Calgary also has a seasonal rental operation.
